Buehler (7-5) earned the win Tuesday against the Brewers, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings.
Buehler threw his second-highest pitch total of the season, tossing 58 of his 98 pitches for strikes, and completed six innings for the first time in 11 starts. His lone run allowed came in the third inning following a leadoff single and a hit batter. After surrendering 20 runs across 11 innings during a disastrous stretch in early July, the right-hander has allowed no more than three runs in each of his last five starts. Through 24 outings this season, Buehler owns a 4.88 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 100:47 K:BB across 114.1 innings. He's scheduled to face the Mets on Monday next.
Padres' Jackson Merrill: Launches game-winning long ball

Merrill came up big in the seventh inning, belting a two-run shot to center field to turn a one-run deficit into a one-run lead. It was the third straight game with a long ball for the center fielder, and the hit extended his on-base streak to 10 games spanning the entirety of August. Merrill is slashing .359/.390/.744 during that stretch with four homers, nine runs, 13 RBI and two stolen bases. His .712 season OPS remains mildly disappointing, but he's at a much more impressive 1.038 OPS across 24 contests since the All-Star break.

France accounted for San Diego's first run with a solo blast to left field in the second inning. He added a single in the seventh and was on base when Jackson Merrill followed with a two-run homer to provide the winning margin. France continued his strong second half, posting his 12th multi-hit performance through 24 games. He's slashing an impressive .344/.390/.611 with six home runs, 18 RBI and 17 runs during that stretch.

Miller was handed the ball in the top of the ninth inning with San Diego nursing a one-run lead. He retired the first two batters he faced before issuing a walk to William Contreras. Miller got out of the frame when pinch runner Brandon Lockridge was thrown out trying to steal second base. The All-Star closer posted his 30th save of the campaign, tied for second most in the majors behind Bryan Baker (34). It's the first time in Miller's career that he's reached the 30-save mark.

Padres' Casey Mize: Much better in second start for SD

Mize tossed six innings in a no-decision against Milwaukee on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six batters.
Mize was hammered by Arizona for eight runs over 3.1 innings in his San Diego debut last Wednesday, but he was much better in his second start with his new club. The right-hander gave up a Christian Yelich two-run homer in the second inning, but that was the only time the Brewers were able to score against him. Mize induced just six swinging strikes, but he still managed a respectable six punchouts and recorded his ninth quality start of the campaign. He's being asked to help stabilize a shaky Padres rotation and is lined up to make his next start on the road against the Guardians.
Pivetta (forearm) threw off a mound Monday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
It's not clear as to how many pitches Pivetta threw during Monday's throwing session, but it's a good sign that he was able to get back on the mound after exiting his last rehab appearance Tuesday due to tightness in his right elbow. He'll presumably be re-evaluated over the course of the next few days to determine the next step in his rehab.

Giolito landed on the injured list June 23 due to right elbow inflammation but was able to resume light throwing within a week. However, the veteran pitcher hasn't yet progressed to facing hitters, and it's unclear how far away a minor-league rehab assignment may be. Pivetta is in a holding pattern in terms of resuming a rehab stint, but he's still been able to do some throwing. The right-hander exited a rehab start -- his first since landing on the injured list April 14 due to a right flexor strain -- with Triple-A El Paso on Aug. 4 after throwing just 14 pitches, though he did get in some more throws in the bullpen afterward. According to Cassavell, the Padres have "tentative plans" for Pivetta to throw a bullpen session but haven't revealed a date for that to take place.

It was Musgrove's second rehab outing as he sets his sights on pitching for the big-league club for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in September of 2024. The veteran right-hander tossed 39 pitches in his first rehab start Aug. 4, so he's gradually building up his pitch count in preparation for a return to a spot in San Diego's rotation. Musgrove is likely to need at least one more rehab outing before being activated, but he could be back with the Padres by the end of August, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
Hays went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 7-2 win over the Astros.
Hays signed with the Padres earlier Sunday. He didn't get the start, but he delivered a two-run shot while pinch hitting for Gavin Sheets in the eighth inning. Hays is likely to fill a short-side platoon role in the outfield during his time with the Padres. He is batting .250 with a .676 OPS, two homers, nine RBI, four runs scored, one double and no stolen bases over 13 games between the Padres and the White Sox this season, and he had a .779 OPS over 20 games with Triple-A Charlotte before the White Sox released him.

Vasquez put just two runners on base, as he allowed a single to Taylor Trammell and a home run to Daulton Varsho in the second inning. Beyond that, it was another decent start for Vasquez, who has started his last two appearances. He's pitching to contact without getting burned for now -- he has just four strikeouts over his last 15.2 innings. On the year, he's maintained a 4.16 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 66:31 K:BB through 106 innings over 23 games (19 starts). Vasquez should get at least one more turn through the rotation while Nick Pivetta (forearm) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) work their way back. The next outing for Vasquez is projected to be on the road in Cleveland.
