Analysis

The Cubs were obliterated in D.C. on Thursday (rested a couple of regulars) but for these purposes Friday, that's just fine by me. Used all the scrub relievers so should not affect this matchup -- Cardinals-Cubs at Wrigley in a standalone Friday afternoon game is about as good as baseball gets. I can almost taste the Old Style (yack) in the bleachers. The Cards have a minor advantage being off Thursday, but pitcher Matthew Liberatore (5-9. 5.15 ERA) has been getting rocked fairly often lately. The Cubbies have had some success against him this year. I will Deep Dive this game tomorrow in the newsletter with a parlay but am showing (maybe) my hand with a price that's 15-20 cents low behind Clay Holmes.

The Red Sox have dropped five of six. Their bats have cooled, but the team still owns an .886 OPS vs. RHPs in August. Here they’ll face Pirates starter Bubba Chandler, who has allowed only two earned runs in 11.2 August innings. Flip sides and we see the advantages. Sox LHP Jake Bennett has a 3.17 ERA in 13 starts. He should find success vs. a Pirates lineup that has a .522 OPS vs. southpaws this month. The Pirates are a brutal 10-26 when facing left-handed starters.

Analysis

Malik Willis has taken a step forward in practices lately and will play, along with some other starters. The Commanders also will play some starters but there are bigger injury concerns on Washington’s side. Dan Quinn went 0-3 straight-up in the preseason last year and is 7-20 alltime. Miami may not get more than a few regular-season wins but I like the Dolphins here at less than a field goal.

Analysis

I like the Padres' chances to at least match the Guardians on the scoreboard after 15 outs. Gavin Williams has been solid, but his hard-hit rate and barrel percentage are both near the bottom of the league—just the 3rd and 6th percentiles. On the other side, the Guardians’ projected lineup hasn’t fared well against Michael King, hitting only .175 with a .453 OPS in 40 career at-bats. It all brings to mind old-school hockey, back before 2005, when a tie was still possible and grabbing a half-goal could mean cashing your ticket.

Analysis

There seems to be a bit of early confusion over tonight's Orioles starting pitcher, but it should be Chris Bassitt (4-4, 5.27 ERA) off the injured list -- I'll be doing listed pitchers just in case as I wouldn't like this nearly as much if it's not him. But the Rays have been so profitable at the Trop. Amazingly, they just finished a 9-0 West Coast trip. Seems like a semi-bullpen game that will be started by Steven Matz. The O's are seven games under .500 away and were swept three in St. Pete in May.
